A full Blood Wolf Moon? Just the name alone conjures up plenty of scary images to chill your bones during this 2019 winter!
The January Full Moon is also known as the “Moon After Yule.” In antiquity, January was the month with the deepest snows and coldest winds. This was the time that people noticed the wolf packs hunting nearer to their homes, thus associating this full moon with wolves.
Wolves have long been associated with witchcraft in Northern European and Slavic culture. Even the Native Americans feared the wolf.
“Wolves were sometimes associated with witchcraft in both northern European and some Native American cultures: in Norse folklore, the völva (witch) Hyndla and the giantess Hyrrokin are both portrayed as using wolves as mounts, while in Navajo culture, wolves were feared as witches in wolf’s clothing. Similarly, the Tsilhqot’in believed that contact with wolves could cause mental illness and death.”Wikipedia.com
To add to the mystique of the January Full Moon, today’s full moon will incorporate a Lunar Eclipse (the blood moon part) which will be visible in North and South America, Western Europe, and Africa. This moon will look huge in the night sky because the full moon will occur at the moon’s closest point to earth.
Moongiant.com shares more of the mythology of the Full Wolf Moon.
For pagans, celebrating the magic of a full moon depends on their practice. Many witches honor their gods and goddesses at this time. Other’s find this time of the full moon a powerful boost for them to delve deeper into their spell work.
The Witch of Lupine Hollow shares her Full Wolf Moon Ritual, which I’ve shared here:
January Full Moon Ritual
Light only white candles.
Brew a cup of white tea. Allow it to rest and cool slightly on your altar. (I’m drinking this lovely peach tea.)
Purify your sacred space with pine. Smudge the room, wave a pine bough over the altar or burn pine incense.
Move through two rounds of moon salutations.
Meditate for five to ten minutes. Use this time to really focus on what following the moon cycle means to you: what it meant in 2016 and what you want it to mean in 2017. You may want to hold a hematite crystal during your meditation as it increases psychic awareness. (I am really enjoying the Stop, Think & Breathe meditation app that I recently downloaded – more on that soon!)
Conclude meditation with a divination exercise. My preferred divination is generally tarot but scrying would also be very appropriate here. Take your time with this: you are doing a reading for the coming year, not just your immediate circumstances. Whatever the cards tell you, try to imagine a few different interpretations as to how they could play out in the next twelve moons. Write them down so you can revisit at the end of the year!
If you haven’t already started a Chronicle Grimoire, or at least a moon diary, I highly recommend starting this month. Writing down what you’re thinking and feeling at the full moon, if not throughout the moon cycle, is a great way to be able to check in on yourself and see how your mental and spiritual state changes from month to month.
I’m working on purging old ancestral karma so I’m going to follow this releasing ritual by Finding Magick.
BURN AND RELEASE
What you will need:
This ritual works especially well for visual people, and for times when you have many things you’d like to release from your life.
Use a pen and paper to write down everything that no longer serves you, no matter how big or small it is. You’ve got a full sheet of paper… use it! Get it off your chest and on that paper.
Then burn the paper! Put the piece of paper in –or hold it over — an abalone shell or other fireproof receptacle to burn. Please be sure the shell is on a fireproof surface away from anything that could burn. And it should go without saying, but never leave burning/smoldering paper unattended!
As you watch the paper burn, visualize everything you listed on that paper burning away and leaving your life… for good!
Here’s what Vedic Philosophical Ayurvedic, Maharani Rutan, predicts for this Full Blood Wolf Moon: Lionize, Liberate, Learn and Love: Last Lunar Eclipse in Leo beyond 2040. I follow her predictions regularly. ❤
