The Full Harvest Moon: My Celebration

On Friday, September 13th at 9:33 pm (PST) the full Harvest Moon in Pisces rose in the sky as darkness descended.  This date was special to me as it was my youngest daughter’s birthday, and the day I had selected to bless my faery tree and sacred spiral in my backyard.

SEPTEMBER MOON PHASE UPDATE
On September 12th and 13th, the Moon will be in a Waxing Gibbous. In this phase, the Moon is getting brighter each night until the Full Moon. For Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones in the United States, the Full will happen just before midnight on the night of the 13th. For East Coast USA and Europe, the Full Moon will happen just after midnight, making it on September 14th. After the Full Moon, the Moon turns to a Waning Gibbous with the shadow growing larger each night.

A full moon means that the moon’s placement is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, forming a polarity. This tension affects us with disruptions in feelings and instincts. Did you feel something strange last Friday night? I did! The energy was electric! In fact, I found it hard to sleep that night!

On Friday night, I dedicated my sacred circle under the full moon with my neighbor, Sherri in attendance. How often do you meet someone who shares the same interests as your own? The minute Sherri showed me her bedroom, I knew we would become friends.

I’d waited until the full harvest moon to do this blessing because of the intensity of the energy associated with the full moon in Pisces. Even though my birthday falls in April under the sign of Aries, I’d recently learned that I’m a combination of three signs: Aquarius, Pisces, and Aries – air, water, and fire! What a combination!

To begin the evening, I used the Wiccan chant below to cast my circle. Many blessings and thanks to Mackenzie Sage Wright for her wisdom. ❤

“Starting in the north, envision you’re drawing up the Earth energies and drawing down the universal energies (for more on circle casting, see here). Walk around once, saying:

I conjure the Circle of Power, by my will and by my Word,

I conjure the Circle of Power, a boundary between the worlds;

I conjure the Circle of Power, a sacred space for worship;

I conjure the Circle of Power to shelter us from negative energies;

I conjure the Circle of Power to contain the energies raised within;

By the powers above, and the powers below, I close this circle- so mote it be!

I placed 12 votive candles around the sacred circle. The 13th light in the middle is a solar light. See the full moon hovering in the sky? The entire area was bathed in the white light from the Full Harvest Moon!

I created this great Glyph image around my faery tree in the middle of my backyard as a thank you to the land spirits or wights, for allowing me to live on the land with them. I live in a new housing area in a place where the desert stretches for miles.

“Some scholars have suggested that landvættir (wights) are chthonic in nature, spirits of the dead, but others have interpreted them as nature spirits, since they sometimes live in land that has never been populated.”

My prayer was simple, and I left a gift of a small cupcake (Brigid’s Brownies) with an offering of honey and milk for the good neighbors inside my home. I don’t want to draw the coyotes, so it was best to leave the offerings inside.

“Hail to thee, spirits of the earth. Thank you for allowing me to live on this patch of land. Grant us a winter that is as long, as cold, and as dark as it needs to be. Thank you for being with me at this full Harvest Moon. Enjoy your slumber and dream of a world in balance.”

When I first saw this house and the bare strip of land behind it, I asked the land wights for permission to live with them in harmony. I knew this was the spot where I should live. I’ve always felt complete and at peace, in this place, I call home.

As you can see, my garden is flourishing. I believe it is because of the blessings I’ve received from the land wights. There is no more primal relationship than the one I share with my garden and the land that grows it.

After I cast the circle, I placed my crystals beneath the faery tree to be cleansed by the energy of this full moon.

Lastly, we said a prayer to the moon goddess:

The kind fates have blessed my home. The kind fates have blessed my heart. I offer thanks with a humble heart. I thank the Goddess for her protection and for her love. I thank the goddess for continued blessings already on their way. Blessed be.

To end our ceremony, we raised our glass and toasted the gods and goddesses.

The intensity of the moon energy I felt Friday night was more than I’d ever felt before. I found myself tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep. Nevertheless, I’d promised Sherri I’d rise early so we could do our usual walk.

The energy from this Full Harvest Moon still affected me the next morning. The moon lingered in the morning sky when we started our walk. After our usual 3 miles, I went home and slept for a few hours.

If you’ve never engaged in a full moon ritual, I would encourage you to do so. I still feel invigorated by the energies I received from that night. I connected to a deeper place inside my spiritual realm, and that fills my heart with joy.

Namaste & Blessed be! How did you celebrate the full harvest moon?
